Trilby Ohio is a local-history project dedicated to the people, places, buildings, schools, and businesses of the old Trilby area in West Toledo. Although Trilby eventually became part of the City of Toledo, the neighborhood name remains familiar to generations of local residents.

The heart of the community developed around Secor Road and Alexis Road. However, Trilby’s story also extends along Laskey Road, Tremainsville Road, and the surrounding neighborhoods. These roads connected residents with schools, stores, restaurants, taverns, service stations, and other everyday gathering places.

Some Trilby landmarks still stand today. Meanwhile, others have changed names, welcomed new businesses, or disappeared completely. Old photographs, advertisements, newspaper mentions, and personal memories help preserve their stories.

Explore the complete history of Trilby Ohio to learn more about the neighborhood’s early development, schools, roads, farms, and changing community identity.

Historic Trilby Ohio Places and Local Businesses

Businesses played an important role in everyday life throughout Trilby Ohio. Residents could shop locally, attend neighborhood schools, have their cars repaired, enjoy dinner, or meet friends without traveling far from home.

Over the years, the community included auto dealers, bicycle shops, hardware stores, restaurants, taverns, salons, grocery stores, and small neighborhood businesses. Places such as Brondes Ford, Otto’s Variety Store, Janney’s, R House, Casey’s Toledo, and other familiar names became part of local memory.

Many buildings also had more than one purpose. For example, one location might begin as a house, become a business, and later welcome several different establishments. Therefore, studying a single property can reveal several chapters of Trilby history.

Historic photographs help visitors understand how much the neighborhood has changed. A picture can preserve a school before its demolition, show an earlier version of a commercial building, or bring back the appearance of a long-closed store.

The photographs on this site include Trilby Elementary School, the original Brondes building, Hoffstetter’s Drug Store, Janney’s, Otto’s Variety Store, and the building that eventually became Casey’s Toledo. Together, these images create a visual record of the neighborhood.

Why Trilby’s History Matters

Neighborhood history often disappears gradually. Buildings are remodeled, signs come down, businesses close, and photographs remain hidden in family albums. As a result, important details can be lost within only a few generations.

TrilbyOhio.com is working to collect those details while people still remember them. A business name, old address, photograph, menu, matchbook, advertisement, or personal story may help answer questions about a place that no longer exists.

Even a short memory can add something valuable. In addition, corrections and additional information can help create a more accurate record for future visitors.
